Sigard Richard Grimstad
Richard Grimstad was the son of Hilda Mockler, a housekeeper, who was born in Germany and who came to the United States in 1924. Richard was born on 1/18/1945, lived in Teaneck, NJ and graduated from Teaneck High School in 1962. He is described in his High School Yearbook as being 6’ 1” tall, with an interest in the outdoors and in telling jokes. He was a member of the Track Team. After graduating, he attended and graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois before enlisting in the Marines in June 1967. Prior to enlisting, Richard studied architectural engineering at night at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. During this time period, this ambitious young man worked during the day as a draftsman.
Richard’s tour of Vietnam began on 12/29/67. He served in the United State Marines in E Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment, 1st Division. Richard served as a Rifleman and achieved the rank of Private 1st Class.
On 5/19/68 Private Grimstad was killed in action as a result of being wounded by an explosive device in Quang Tri Provence, South Vietnam, southeast of the Khesanh Combat Base. This valiant Marine was awarded the Purple heart Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He is buried in George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ.
