Richard Gerard Jewett
Richard Jewett was born in New Jersey on 10/23/1929 to Millicent and Frank Jewett. He had a younger sister, Shirley. The family lived in Teaneck, NJ.
Richard attended Teaneck High School (Class of 1947). “Dick” is described in his High School Yearbook as being tall, capable and being well known for his leadership and scholarship. He liked sports and popular music; and planned on entering college to become an experimental forester.
Dick was a member of the High School Football team. He served as Treasurer of the Student Council, was Captain of Student Service and Vice President of the Junior Cabinet.
After graduating from Teaneck High School in 1947, Richard entered North Carolina State University as a forestry student. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the ROTC in 1949 and in the regular Army in June of 1952 at Fort Benning, Georgia. He arrived in Korea on July 15, 1952 and served in the Army Infantry, 2nd Division, 23rd Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Company L.
Lieutenant Jewett was killed in action on 9/19/52 while leading an advance patrol near Pangsok-Tong in the North Korean sector. He was killed in an ambush.
This courageous Army Officer was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Korean War Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He lies buried in Hackensack Cemetery, Hackensack, NJ.
