William Crider

Crider was the son of Harry and Bertha Crider. The father hailed from Iowa while the mother was an immigrant from Wales.  They lived in Michigan for a time but by 1930 the family resided at 104 Sherwood Avenue.   William graduated from THS class of 1939.  He was a sports star and captained the baseball team.  His nickname was “Apple”.

Crider was a longshoreman before he entered the National Guard on December 7, 1940. He was an instructor at Fort Lewis, Washington for three years. Crider earned the Expert Infantryman Badge.

Crider went overseas as a member of the 45th Division, 157th Regiment (the Thunderbirds). He was a Tech Sergeant.   In the fighting for Main on Rhine on March 29, 1945, Crider was killed. For his heroic actions he was awarded the Silver Star.   He is buried at the Lorrain American Cemetery and Memorial.
