Henry Finnell Jr.

Henry Joseph Finnell Jr. was born to Florence and Henry Joseph Finnell. Like any teenager, Harry liked sports. He read about them in the paper, and played them on the field. When he got out of school, Harry wanted to be an agricultural agent. He graduated Teaneck High School in 1939.

Early on, before war was even declared, Harry enlisted into the Navy from New York and was stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Harry was no rookie when it came to seeing action. He had been at Pearl Harbor when the bombs dropped on December 7 and fought at Midway the follow June. Although he was only a Naval Air Force Cadet then, he was determined to follow through with his service.

He was an Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class, when his escort carrier, the USS Liscome Bay, sunk on November 24th, 1944 by a Japanese submarine. He was reported missing in action. While he could not be given a proper burial, Henry was posthumously given the Purple Heart for his service.
