William Sheridan

William Sheridan was born on 8/14/1921 in East Orange, New Jersey to William and Genevieve Sheridan. His family lived in municipalities in Bergen County New Jersey which included: Jersey City, Fort Lee, New Milford, and Teaneck. He attended St. Anastasia’s School in Teaneck and Teaneck High School.

While at Teaneck High School (Class of 1940), William played football and was a member of the Junior Cabinet. He was described as being good natured and sincere. His ambition was to own his own business.

William enlisted on 8/7/42. He served in the United States Army Air Force in the 567th Bomb Squadron, 389th Bomb Group. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. On 8/1/43 Staff Sergeant Sheridan was serving as a Waist Gunner on a B-24 Liberator Bomber on the first low altitude bombing of the Ploesti Oil Fields in Romania. He was first reported missing in action. It was later learned that he had been killed in action when his plane was shot down.

Staff Sergeant Sheridan was awarded the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Presidential Citation medals.

This brave man is buried in George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery in Paramus, New Jersey.
