Walter G. Webb

Walter G. Webb was born in New Jersey in about 1918 to Margaret and Martin Webb. He had a sister, Elaine. The family lived in Teaneck, NJ since 1927. Walter attended Teaneck High School and graduated in 1936. Walter (“Webby”) was described in his yearbook as being tall, angular, blond and having a way with the girls. He played basketball and golf, was a Student Council Representative, Track Manager and active in the Aviation Club.

Walter attended Oberlin College for two years and majored in Business Administration. He taught Sunday School at the Methodist Episcopal Church of Teaneck and was a Boy Scout Patrol Leader.
Walter’s engagement to Doris Lubben of Bogota was announced shortly before Walter enlisted in the Army on September 29,1941. After Private Webb was in the Army for 6 months, he was sent to North Ireland and later to North Africa where he fought under General George Patton in the 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Division.

Private Webb was killed in combat in Tunisia, North Africa on 3/27/43. His parents last heard from their son on 3/14/43.

This courageous soldier was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. He is buried in the North Africa American Cemetery in Carthage, Tunisia and he is memorialized in Tunis Tunisia.
