Henry William Wolber

Henry William Wolber was born in New York in 1918. He was the son of Lena and Henry W. Wolber Sr. He had a sister, Grace. On July 23, 1942 Henry married Kay Neumuller of Teaneck. He lived with his wife at 78 Ayers Court.

Staff Sergeant Wolber was the first Marine from Bergen County to have died in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was trained as a paratrooper, but was transferred to the Fifth Marine Division, serving in the Demolition Squad. He received the Presidential Citation Medal and the Purple Heart. He was also a veteran of Guadalcanal, Bourgainville, Vella Levella and New Caldonia.

Prior to his enlisting with the Marines he served in the US Army. He was stationed for two years in Hawaii and spent 3 years at West Point NY with the Military Police.

Staff Sergeant Wolber was killed (2/23/45) in action in the battle of Iwo Jima two years and seven months to the date that he and Kay were married.

This brave soldier is memorialized in the Honolulu, Hawaii, National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
