Henderson Dies; Was Councilman

The Hudson Dispatch Mary 31, 1966

Teaneck Councilman Robert Henderson, who was sworn in Tuesday to his second term as a member of the township governing body, died yesterday in Holy Name Hospital, Teaneck.

Councilman Henderson was admitted to the hospital shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday after he complained of not feeling well while visiting police headquarters. Police took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3;45 p.m.

He was 61 years old a bachelor, and resided at 821 Red rd., Teaneck.

Mr. Henderson was reelected to office on May 10, placing seventh in a 17 candidate contest. He was first elected to the council in 1962 and prior to that served on the board of education from 1947 to 1950.

He had been a resident of Teaneck since 1922.

Born in Pearl River, N. Y., the councilman was educated in the Pearl River public schools. He studied business administration at Columbia University and for a while taught public speaking courses in Hackensack, New Rochelle, N. Y., and Glen Rock Evening High school.

In 1934, he organized the Bergen County Players Guild, an amateur theatrical group, and directed all its productions for five years. During the war, he was a staff sergeant in army and saw combat in the European and North African campaigns. After the German Army collapsed in North Africa, he was in charge of supplies of stockades and prisoner of war camps in Algiers and Morocco.

Originally in the importing business, Councilman Henderson turned to Journalism and advertising after the war. He was associated with several Bergen County weekly newspapers and operated his own advertising firm locally.

Somewhat of a civil war buff, at the time of his death he had been writing a historical novel based on the trial of the assassinators of Abraham Lincoln. He was a close friend of newspaperman-author Jim Bishop, who apparently served as an inspiration for his book.

He is survived by six sisters, Mrs. August Terhune of Laurelhurst, Mrs. Ivan Vaz of Largo, Fla., Mrs. Charles Glasier, Mrs. Cecil Hardy, Mrs. John Stiansen and Mrs. George Beaumont, all of Teaneck, and a brother, Kenneth of Ridgefield Park.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at Clifford H. Peinecke Funeral Home, 1321 Teaneck rd., Teaneck. Rev. Theodore Beiderwieden, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Teaneck will officiate. Funeral will take place Friday morning.
