Deputy appointed acting chief of Teaneckfore

O'Reilly has 25 years of experience

TEANECK — Deputy Chief Glenn O'Reilly will serve as acting police chief until the township manager appoints a new top cop.

O'Reilly was appointed Tuesday night by Township Manager William Broughton. He is taking the role over from Robert Carney, a veteran officer of nearly three decades who retires effective Jan. 1.

“It’s an honor and a pleasure,” said O’Reilly about his appointment.

He added that when he started his career, being a chief was not his focus but over time “it became more of something I felt I could obtain.”

O’Reilly will receive an extra $5,000 for the additional responsibilities — raising his salary to $185,000, Broughton said.

O’Reilly has been with the Police Department for 25 years. He began his career July 29, 1991, according to information provided by the township manager’s office. He is a third-generation police officer. His father and grandfather were Teaneck police officers.

The decision to appoint O’Reilly comes as no surprise. During Carney's walk-out ceremony last week, Broughton said O’Reilly would replace Carney.

“I’ve known Glenn since I was 15 years old,” said Deputy Mayor Elle Katz. “Glenn is a real professional who is very dedicated to the Teaneck police officers and township residents.”

O’Reilly said that he would want to be the full-time chief.

"It's an honor to serve the residents and work with such fine men and women," he said. "It’s an honor.”
