The graph shows how New Jersey's "Cost of Living" is rising beyond our teachers' ability to pay. This has resulted in a number of our teachers leaving the profession for more lucrative positions in industry. This fact, together with the number of men serving in the armed forces, makes it imperative to retain as many of our teachers as possible. In order to avoid a crisis and to maintain our present educational standards, the Board of Education recommends a reasonable increase in our teachers' salaries. We quote as follows, from an editorial appearing in the BERGEN EVENING RECORD, under date of January 6, 1943: "According to data assembled by the National Commission for the Defense of Democracy through Education, teachers' colleges of the United states are preparing 34 per cent fewer students to enter the teaching profession than they were in 1940-41, and the Commission predicts that the continuing decline in enrollment will result in having only 50,000 new teachers to fill between 80,000 and 100,000 vacancies expected in the 1943-44 school term. ** The traditional attractions of teaching as a profession, enhanced by the security which such a life offers, may be sufficient in ordinary times to guarantee a continuing supply of competent teachers, but cannot be expected to overcome losses to the armed services and to well-paid work in industry.*"
